Ketanji Brown Jackson is an American attorney and jurist. She has been an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States , since June 30, 2022. She was previously Vice Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, from February 12, 2010 to December 2014, a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, from March 26, 2013 to June 17, 2021, and a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from June 17, 2021 to June 29, 2022.
Ketanji is the daughter of Ellery/Ella Ree, who was principal at New World School of the Arts, and Johnny Brown, who was chief attorney for the Miami-Dade County School Board. Her parents graduated from historically black colleges. Her uncle, Calvin Ross, was Chief of the Miami, Florida Police Department. Ketanji was raised in Miami.
Ketanji is married to surgeon Patrick Graves Jackson, with whom she has two children. Patrick’s brother is married to the sister of Janna Ryan, who is the wife of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan . Ketanji is a non-denominational Protestant.
Ketanji’s paternal grandfather was Thomas Logan Brown (the son of Ed Brown and Willie Cross). Thomas was born in Dougherty County, Georgia. Ed was born in Georgia, the son of William Brown and Patsy Allen. Willie was born in Dougherty County,, the daughter of Horace Cross and Alice Prince.
Ketanji’s paternal grandmother was Queen/Queenie Anderson (the daughter of James Anderson and Ellen Reliford/Rutherford). Queen was born in Queensland, Georgia. Ellen was born in Houston County, Georgia, the daughter of Crockett Reliford/Rutherford and Caroline Lane.
Ketanji’s maternal grandfather was Horace/Horrace Ross (the son of Jim Ross and Daisey/Daisy Reese). Horace was born in Georgia. Jim was born in South Carolina, the son of Raphael Ross and Lukey/Sukey “Luckey.” Daisy was born in Baker County, Georgia.
