He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to a German father, of Hungarian heritage, and a Panamanian mother. He eventually opted to play for the German national team, after also being qualified to play for Brazil or Panama. He holds German, Panamanian, and Brazilian citizenship. His son is professional footballer Karlo Kurányi.
