Laurence Fishburne is an American actor, playwright, producer, screenwriter, and film director. He has had leading roles in the films Apocalypse Now , What’s Love Got to Do With It , The Matrix films, Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), Akeelah and the Bee , and the John Wick franchise.
Laurence’s mother, Hattie Bell (Crawford), was a mathematics and science teacher. His legal father, Laurence John Fishburne, was a juvenile corrections officer. He was raised mostly in Brooklyn, New York. Laurence found out in his late 40s that Laurence Fishburne was not his biological father. On the show Finding Your Roots, with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2025), Laurence discovered that his biological father was a man named William Seigel Bohannan, who worked for the railway, and who had died in 2017.
Laurence has four children, including two with his former wife, casting director Hajna O. Moss, and a daughter with his former wife, actress Gina Torres . Among his children with Hajna is actor and ballet dancer Langston Fishburne .

Laurence’s biological paternal grandfather was Murvin Hilliard Bohannan (the son of Herbert H. Bohannon and Covie Reagan). Murvin was born in Macon, Bibb, Georgia. Covie was the daughter of Maryuthey Wyatt.
Laurence’s biological paternal grandmother was Loretta Constance Sandridge (the daughter of William G. Sandridge and Yetta Geneva Williams). Loretta was born in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. William was the son of Paul A. Sandridge and Anna L. Morgan. Yetta was the daughter of Harry W. Williams and Nancy Watiker. Laurence’s great-great-grandfather Paul Sandridge was born into slavery, the son of Lucy Carpenter. Paul and Lucy were owned by Ethan Carpenter, who willed his slaves freed upon his death.
