Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo was a Spanish politician. He served as Prime Minister of Spain , from 26 February, 1981 to 2 December, 1982. He was also Minister of Trade, from 13 December, 1975 to 6 July, 1976, Minister for Minister of Public Works, from 4 July, 1976 to April 1977, Relations with the European Communities, from 25 February, 1978 to 9 September, 1980, and Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, and Minister of Economy, both, from 9 September, 1980 to 25 February, 1981; as well as, a Member of the Congress of Deputies for Madrid, from 22 July, 1977 to 31 August, 1982, and again, from 28 July, 1983 to 23 April, 1986.
Prime Minister Calvo-Sotelo was the son of Mercedes Bustelo Vázquez and Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo. He was married to María del Pilar Ibáñez-Martín Mellado, with whom he had eight children. He graduated as a civil engineer from the School of Civil Engineers of Madrid.
Prime Minister Calvo-Sotelo’s paternal grandfather was Pedro Calvo y Camina (the son of a man surnamed Calvo and Tomasa Camina Andrés). Pedro was born in Meneses de Campos, Palencia.
Prime Minister Calvo-Sotelo’s paternal grandmother was Eloisa Sotelo Lafuente (the daughter of Joaquín Sotelo Valledor y Vivero and Manuela Lafuente Rogina). Eloisa was from Ribadeo, Lugo. The surname Sotelo is very common in Galicia, of Italian origin.
