Leslie is the daughter of Mary and John Francis Hellen, Jr. Her father was of Irish descent. Her maternal grandparents were Polish emigrants from Germany, possibly present-day Polish territory. Her family lived in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and finally Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania.
Leslie’s paternal grandfather was John Francis Hellen (the son of Thomas Hellen and Margaret Mahoney). John was an Irish emigrant, from Cork. Thomas was the son of Thomas Hellen and Margaret Carthy. Leslie’s great-grandmother Margaret was the daughter of Peter Mahoney.
Leslie’s paternal grandmother was Mary Loftus (the daughter of Barnard Loftus, Jr. and Mary Crotty). Mary was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, to Irish parents. Barnard was the son of Patrick Loftus and Mary Coyne.
Leslie’s maternal grandfather was named Peter Paul Faltinosky (the son of Frank Faltinowski).
