She was born in Madrid, and speaks Spanish fluently. Her father was Puerto Rican, and worked at the U.S. Embassy in Spain, with Lillian being educated on a U.S. military base. The family eventually returned to the U.S., settling in Columbia, South Carolina. She is a devout Catholic.
