Liv Ullmann is a Norwegian actress, film director, and filmmaker. Her roles include the films The Wayward Girl (1959), Tonny , De kalte ham Skarven , Persona , Hour of the Wolf , Shame (1968), An-Magritt , The Passion of Anna , Cold Sweat (1970), The Night Visitor , The Emigrants (1971), The New Land , Pope Joan (1972), Cries and Whispers , Lost Horizon , Scenes from a Marriage (1973), 40 Carats , Zandy’s Bride , The Abdication , Léonor , Face to Face (1976), A Bridge Too Far , The Serpent’s Egg , Autumn Sonata , Richard’s Things , The Wild Duck , Dangerous Moves , The Bay Boy , Let’s Hope It’s a Girl , Gaby: A True Story , Farewell Moscow , The Girlfriend (1988), The Rose Garden , Mindwalk , The Ox , Dreamplay , The Danish Poet , and Two Lives ; the made-for-tv movies Jacobo Timerman: Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number and Saraband ; and many stage plays. She has directed the films Sofie (1992), Kristin Lavransdatter , which she wrote; Private Confessions , Faithless (2000), and Miss Julie (2014), which she also wrote.

Liv was born in Tokyo, the daughter of Norwegian parents, Janna Erbe (Lund) and Erik Viggo Ullmann, an aircraft engineer who was working in Japan at the time. Her father was born in Vardø, Finnmark. Her mother was born in Engstykket, Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag. Her family moved to Ontario, Canada, when she was two, while her father worked on a Norwegian air force base there, on Toronto Island; and later to New York, eventually settling in Trondheim, Norway. Her mother worked as a bookseller.

Liv has a daughter, author and journalist Linn Ullmann, with her former partner, Swedish film director, screenwriter, and producer Ingmar Bergman . Linn is married to novelist, poet, and dramatist Niels Fredrik Dahl. Her granddaughter, Linn’s daughter, is filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel.

Her paternal grandfather was sent to the Dachau concentration camp during WWII for helping Jews escape from his Norwegian town. He died in the camp.

Liv’s paternal grandfather was Halfdan Andreas Ullmann (the son of Johan Christian Viggo Ullmann and Marie Vilhelmine Eriksen). Halfdan was born in Seljord, Telemark. Johan was born in Oslo, the son of Jørgen Nicolai Axel Ullmann and Cathrine Johanne Fredrikke Vilhelmine “Mina” Dunker. Marie was born in Løten, Hedmark, the daughter of Sogneprest til Løten Andreas Melchior Eriksen and Francisca Wilhelmine Birgitte Hansteen.

Liv’s paternal grandmother was Dagmar Jenny Erika Nilsen (the daughter of Erik Emanuel Nilsen and Jenny Maria Florelius). Dagmar was born in Oslo. Erik was born in Trondheim, Sor-Trondelag, the son of Maskinist Hans Jakob/Jacob Nielsen/Nilsen and Johanne Andrea Eriksdatter/Erichsdatter Braarud/Braarød/Eriksen. Liv’s great-grandmother Jenny was born in Åmål, Västra Götaland County, Sweden, the daughter of Sven Fredrik Florelius and Maria Svensdotter.

Liv’s maternal grandfather was Johan Tobias Lund (the son of Johan Tobias Atke Lund and Ellen Margrethe Barstad Dahl). Liv’s grandfather Johan was born in Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag. Liv’s great-grandfather Johan was born in Hitra, Sør-Trøndelag, the son of Hans Atche Lund and Anne Margrethe Cecilie Irgens. Ellen was born in Trondheim, the daughter of Ole Arntsen Møllerdahlen/Dahl and Maria Hansdatter Barstad.

Liv’s maternal grandmother was Oline Christiane Erbe (the daughter of Just Henrik Erbe and Anna Petrine Brun). Oline was born in Trondheim, Sor-Trondelag. Just was born in Trondheim, the son of Pø/Peter Oluf Erbe and Bereth Martha Olsdatter. Anna was the daughter of O. Brun.
