Lou Reed was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist and vocalist of rock band The Velvet Underground, and a member of music group Metal Machine Trio. He also had a prominent solo career. John Cale and Sterling Morrison were also members of the Velvet Underground.
Lou was the son of Toby and Sidney Joseph Rabinowitz, and grew up in Freeport, New York. He was married to avant-garde artist, composer, musician, and film director Laurie Anderson, until his death.
Lou’s paternal grandfather was Mendel Rabinowitz (the son of Solomon Rabinowitz and Mollie Novack/Novick). Mendel was born in Russia.
