Louis is the son of Sarah Mae Manning (later Sumayah Farrakhan) and Percival Clarke/Clark. His father was Jamaican. His mother was Kittian. His parents separated while his mother was pregnant, and he was named after Louis Walcott, from Barbados, a man his mother was seeing at the time of his birth. He was raised partly in Roxbury, Boston. He was raised in the Episcopal St. Cyprian’s Church. Louis converted to the Nation of Islam in 1955, and ministered several mosques in Boston and Harlem.
