Luke Hughes is an American professional ice hockey player. A defenseman, he plays for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL), and has also played with the U.S. national team. He played college hockey with the University of Michigan, reaching the Frozen Four.

His mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes , has played ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer, and competed internationally for the U.S. women’s national hockey team. His father, Jim Hughes, is a hockey player and team captain, who was director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. His brothers are professional ice hockey players Quinn Hughes and Jack Hughes . His uncle is sociologist and academic administrator Adam S. Weinberg, who has been President of Denison University, since July 1, 2013. Luke was raised in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Luke had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony, as did his brothers.

Luke’s paternal grandfather is named Marty Hughes. Marty was a U.S. Marine, and battalion chief with the New York City Fire Department.

Luke’s paternal grandmother was Eileen Theresa Rowden (the daughter of William R. Rowden and Catherine/Katherine D. Brown). Eileen was born in New York City, New York. William was born in The Bronx, New York City. His father, William Rowden, was the son of parents from England, his father born in Manchester, Lancashire, and his mother born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, to Irish parents. William’s mother, Luke’s great-great-grandmother Margaret May Talbot, was the daughter of Irish immigrants. Luke’s great-grandmother Katherine was born in Lewisboro, Westchester, New York, the daughter of William Brown and Katherine E., whose own parents were also Irish.

Luke’s maternal grandfather was Warren Abraham Weinberg (the son of Nathan Weinberg and Pauline Stein). Warren was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and was a top neurologist. Luke’s great-grandmother Pauline was born in Indiana, the daughter of Abraham Stein and Freda/Frieda, who were Austrian Jewish immigrants.

Luke’s maternal grandmother is Lynne Penny Klamon (the daughter of Jerome/Jerry Erwin Klaymon/Klayman/Klamon and Burnise Mildred Gruskin). Jerry was born in Missouri, the son of Russian Jewish parents, Leo/Layzar Mutkah Klaymon/Klayman/Klamon/Kilemnik and Dora Herman, from Rovno. Luke’s great-grandmother Burnise was born in Poland, the daughter of Morris Carl Gruskin, a Russian Jewish emigrant, who had roots in Kaunas, Lithuania; and of Elenor/Eleanor “Nell” Rubenstein, who was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, to Russian Jewish parents.
