Lynn Swann is an American professional football player, broadcaster, athletic director, and politician. A wide receiver, he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He co-owned the Pittsburgh Power, and was athletic director for USC. He was voted Super Bowl MVP for Super Bowl X (1976). He was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame, and was on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, from 2002 to 2005.
Lynn is the son of Mildred and Willie Edward Swann. He was initially raised on the Great Smoky Mountains, near Knoxville, before his family moved to San Mateo, in the San Francisco area, when he was a small child; and then to nearby Foster City. He is married to psychologist Charena Shaffer, with whom he has two children.
Lynn’s maternal grandfather was named Fred James McGarity.
Lynn’s maternal grandmother was Mammie Dean (the daughter of Osborne Dean and Ella White).
