Ma Ying-jeou is a Taiwanese politician. He served as President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), from 20 May, 2008 to 20 May, 2016. He has also been Minister of Research, Development and Evaluation, from 27 July, 1988 to 27 June, 1991, Minister of Justice, from 27 February, 1993 to 10 June, 1996, Mayor of Taipei, from 25 December, 1998 to 25 December, 2006, and Chairman of the Kuomintang, from 27 July, 2005 to 13 February, 2007, and again, from 17 October, 2009 to 3 December, 2014.

His parents, Chin Hou-hsiu and Ma Ho-ling, were from Hunan province in Mainland China. His father was a high official of Kuomintang and the Republic of China. His family moved to Taiwan in 1952. He is married to Taiwanese lawyer Christine Chow Ma, with whom he has two children.

Ma is patrilineally descended from the Han Dynasty General Ma Yuan, and Three Kingdoms-era General Ma Chao.
