She was the daughter of Helene de Rosiere (Tuaillon) and John Carroll, a professor of languages. Her father was Irish, from County Limerick. Her mother was French. Madeleine became a U.S. citizen in 1943. Her sister, Marguerite, was killed in WWII’s London Blitz. She had a daughter with her former husband, chairman and CEO of Time Inc., and philanthropist, Andrew Heiskell.
