Mariel Hemingway is an American actress and author. Her roles include the films Manhattan , Lipstick , Personal Best , Star 80 , Bad Moon (1996), Deconstructing Harry , and The Contender .
She is daughter of Byra Louise (Whittlesey) and Canadian-American fly fisherman, conservationist, and writer Jack Hemingway (John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway), and the granddaughter of author Ernest Hemingway . Her sister was model and actress Margaux Hemingway. She was raised mostly in Ketchum, Idaho. She is the half-niece of wildlife manager and writer Patrick Hemingway and physician and writer Gloria Hemingway, and a half-cousin of author and freelance journalist Lorian Hemingway and Canadian-American author John Hemingway. She has two children, fashion model and actress Dree Hemingway and artist, actress, and model Langley Fox, with her former husband, writer, director, and producer Stephen Crisman.
Mariel was named after Mariel, a Cuban fishing village, was visited by her grandfather and father.
Mariel’s patrilineal line can be traced to Ralph Hemingway, who was born, c. 1609, in England, and to his wife Elizabeth Hewes.
Mariel’s paternal grandfather was Ernest Miller Hemingway (the son of Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and Grace H. Hall). Ernest was born in Oak Park, Cook, Illinois, and was of almost entirely English, and a small amount of German, ancestry. Clarence was the son of Anson Tyler Hemingway, who was born in Plymouth, Litchfield, Connecticut, of Colonial American descent; and of Adelaide Edmonds, whose mother was born in London, Ontario, Canada, of German origin, with roots in West Prussia. Mariel’s great-grandmother Grace Hall Hemingway was an opera singer, music teacher, and painter. She was the daughter of English parents, Ernest Miller Hall, who was born in Burslem, Staffordshire; and of Caroline Hancock, who was born in Bristol.
Mariel’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Hadley Richardson (the daughter of James J. Richardson and Florence W. Wyman). Elizabeth was born in St. Louis, Missouri. James was the son of James William Richardson and Laura Mary Cumberland/Cumberford Clifford. Florence was the daughter of Robert Edward Wyman and Elizabeth Florence Hadley.
Mariel’s maternal grandfather was Horace Belden Whittlesey (the son of Henry Hooker Whittlesey and Emma L. Case). Horace was born in Nebraska. Henry was the son of Abner Sheldon Whittlesey and Harriet Atwood Newell. Emma was the daughter of Miles Sidney Case and Emily Jane Bartholomew Brown.
Mariel’s maternal grandmother was Byra Wilhelmina Brooks (the daughter of Byron Powhaton Brooks and Louise/Louisa Anna Friederika Deppe/Dippe). Byra was born in Nebraska. Byron was the son of Oren Stitt Brooks and Mary Ann Campbell. Louise was born in Iowa, the daughter of German parents, Phillip Friedrich Deppe and Wilhelmine Beier.
