She was born in Lourenço Marques, Portuguese Mozambique (now Maputo, Mozambique), the daughter of Isabel Nunes and José Brandão Nunes. Her father was born in Portugal, and has Portuguese, Spanish, and German ancestry. Her mother was born in Mozambique, to a Portuguese father and a Mozambican mother. The family moved to Lisbon, Portugal, when Mariza was three years old.
