Mark Messier is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. A forward, he played for the Indianapolis Racers, the Cincinnati Stingers, the Edmonton Oilers, the New York Rangers, and the Vancouver Canucks of the Natinal Hockey League (NHL); and was with the Canada national team.

Mark is the son of Mary-Jean and Doug Messier, an ice hockey player and coach. His brother, Paul Messier, is also an ice hockey player. Mark is married to Kim. He has three children, including Lyon Messier, who has also played professional hockey.

Mark’s paternal grandfather was Edmond Messier (the son of Avila Messier and Clara Provost). Edmond was of French-Canadian descent. Avila was the son of Amable Messier and Marie Leonice Racicot. Clara was the daughter of Pierre Provost and Adele.

Mark’s paternal grandmother was Elsie Margaret Smith (the daughter of Herbert Hewitt Smith and Margaret Dickenson). Elsie was born in Saskatchewan, to English parents.

Mark’s maternal grandfather was named Jack Dea. The surname Dea usually is of Irish origin.
