He was born in London, to Irish parents. His father is from Leitir Mealláin, Connemara, County Galway. His mother is from Killeenduff, Easky, County Sligo. His brother is writer and director John Michael McDonagh. His parents returned to Ireland when he was 22. He has both Irish and U.K. citizenship.
