Maurice Sendak was an American author, artist, and illustrator of children’s books. His most famous work is “Where the Wild Things Are” (1963). He also wrote “In the Night Kitchen” and “Outside Over There,” and illustrated the “Little Bear” books.

Maurice was the son of Polish Jewish parents, Sadie and Pinchas/Pincus/Philip Sendak, a dressmaker. His father was born in Zambrów, Zambrów County, Podlaski. Both his father and his brother, Jack Sendak, had also written children’s literature.

Maurice’s paternal grandfather was Israel Sendak (the son of Berl Leib Sendak and Sheine Etka Hinda Piorko). Berl was the son of Pinches Sendak and Chaja Fejga. Sheine was the daughter of Icko/Isaac Piorko and Chaja Sora Brzezina/Mrozowicz.

Maurice’s paternal grandmother was named Bella/Bluma Burstein/Buszlyn.

Maurice’s maternal grandfather was named Jacob Jack Schindler.
