Max is the son of Doris (Casella), a social worker, and David Deitch, a newspaper columnist. He grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is married to Leona Robbins, with whom he has two children.
Max’s maternal grandfather was named John Casella. John and Max’s maternal grandmother were Italian. John was a fashion designer.
