Michael Cimino was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and author. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for The Deer Hunter (1978). He also directed the films Thunderbolt and Lightfoot , Heaven’s Gate , Year of the Dragon , The Sicilian , Desperate Hours (1990), The Sunchaser , and a segment of To Each His Own Cinema . He also wrote his Thunderbolt and Lightfoot , Heaven’s Gate , and his segment of To Each His Own Cinema ; and co-wrote his The Deer Hunter , Year of the Dragon , and The Sunchaser . He also co-wrote the films Silent Running , Magnum Force , The Rose (1979), and The Dogs of War .
He was the son of Lucy (Ricca) and Michael Cimino. His paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather were Italian immigrants. His maternal grandmother was born in New York.
