Michael Mayer is an American theatre director, filmmaker, playwright, and producer. He won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening in 2007. Among his stage credits, he has also directed American Idiot , for which he co-wrote the book; and renditions of the operas Rigoletto , in 2012, Marnie , in 2017/2018, La traviata , in 2018, and Aida , in 2024. He directed the films A Home at the End of the World , Flicka , The Seagull (2018), and Single All the Way , and episodes of the shows Alpha House and Smash .
Michael is the son of Louise and Joseph Emanuel Mayer, a labour attorney. He is married to oncologist Roger Waltzman.
