Michaela Coel is a British actress, screenwriter, director, producer, and singer. She is known for creating, writing, directing episodes of, and starring on, the show I May Destroy You . Her roles also include the films Monsters: Dark Continent , Been So Long , Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , and The Christophers ; the shows Top Boy , Chewing Gum , which she also created and wrote; The Aliens , Black Mirror: USS Callister , and Black Earth Rising ; and many works on stage.

Her parents are Ghanaian. She was raised in Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Her cousin is rapper, author, and broadcaster Guvna B (Isaac Charles Bortey Borquaye). Michaela was a religious Pentecostal Christian for a time.

Michaela’s maternal grandfather’s surname was Collinson.
