Mike Flanagan is an American director, writer, editor, and filmmaker. He is known for his works in the horror genre. He has directed the films Absentia (2011), Oculus , Hush (2016), Before I Wake , Ouija: Origin of Evil , Gerald’s Game , Doctor Sleep , and The Life of Chuck ; he also wrote Absentia , Doctor Sleep , and The Life of Chuck , and co-wrote his other films, as well as wrote a segment of the film V/H/S/Beyond . He created the shows The Haunting of Hill House , The Haunting of Bly Manor , Midnight Mass , The Midnight Club (which he co-created); and The Fall of the House of Usher . He also directed all of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass , as well as episodes of the other shows; and wrote for all five series.
Mike was born, and briefly lived, in Salem, Massachusetts. His father was in the U.S. Coast Guard. His family moved often, partly living on Governors Island, in the New York Harbor. He also spent time in Maryland. His sibling is screenwriter, producer, and actor Jamie. Mike is married to actress Kate Siegel . Kate often appears in his projects. He has a son with his former partner, actress Courtney Bell; and two children, including actor Cody Flanagan, with Kate.
Mike’s paternal grandfather was Edward Flanagan (the son of Joseph A. Flanagan and Laura Beatrice McClearn). Edward was born in Massachusetts. Joseph was born in Ireland, the son of Joseph P. Flanagan and Mary Lawlor. Laura was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of Edward J. McClearn and Sarah Lovina Swim, and was of English, Scottish, and Dutch descent.
Mike’s paternal grandmother was Shirley Ellen Emerson (the daughter of Francis Walter Emerson, Sr. and Emma Leonard McKown). Shirley was born in Connecticut. Francis was the son of Walter Leonard Emerson and Mary Ellen Parks. Emma was the daughter of Irving Pinkham McKown and Garnet Betsy Pierce.
Mike’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Stanley Radzvilowicz (the son of John Radzvilowicz and Michelina “Lena” Zacharowa). Joseph was born in Connecticut, to Polish parents. John was the son of Jan Radzvilowicz and Maryanna Palczewska. Michelina was the daughter of Marcel “Martin” Zachorowa and Zofy.
Mike’s maternal grandmother was Irene Lorraine Duhaime (the daughter of Albert Duhaime and Marie Belisle). Irene was born in Connecticut, of French-Canadian descent. Marie was born in Rhode Island, to French-Canadian parents, Joseph Belisle and Tharsile “Theresa” Boucher.
