Ncuti Gatwa is a Rwandan-Scottish actor. He has played the title character on Doctor Who , and is also known for his roles on the shows Sex Education , as Eric, and Masters of the Air ; in the films The Last Letter from Your Lover , Barbie (2023), and The Roses (2025); and in many works on stage.
His father, Tharcisse Gatwa, is from the Karongi District, and is a journalist, with a Ph.D. in theology. His familly left Rwanda during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Ncuti was raised in Scotland, primarily in Oxgangs, Edinburgh, and then Dunfermline. He is a citizen of Rwanda and the U.K.
