Nia DaCosta is an American filmmaker. She has directed the films Little Woods , Candyman (2021), The Marvels , Hedda (2025), and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple . She wrote Little Woods and Hedda , and co-wrote Candyman and The Marvels . She also directed episodes of the show Top Boy , and part of Disney Cruise attraction Avengers: Quantum Encounter .
She was raised in Harlem, Manhattan. Her parents are both black. Her mother, Charmaine/Charmaine DaCosta, was a founding vocalist of hip hop and R&B-influenced reggae group Worl-A-Girl. Nia has said that her father was born in London, England, and that “my family is mostly Jamaican” originally.
DaCosta is often a Sephardi Jewish surname in Jamaica.
