Nia is the daughter of Renate and Joseph Fanene, an actor. Her father was born in New Zealand. Her mother is German. Nia grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii and San Diego, California.
Her father is a cousin of Samoan professional wrestler Peter Maivia, the adoptive step-grandfather of wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson .
