Nicolás Maduro is a Venezuelan politician. He has been President of Venezuela, since 19 April, 2013, and President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, since 5 March, 2013. He has also been President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, from 5 January, 2005 to 7 August, 2006, Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 9 August, 2006 to 13 October, 2012, Vice President of Venezuela, from 13 October, 2012 to 19 April, 2013, President pro tempore of the Union of South American Nations, from 23 April, 2016 to 21 April, 2017, and Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, from 17 September, 2016 to 25 October, 2019.
His father, Nicolás Jesús Maduro Garcia, was a Venezuelan trade unionist, who was born in San José de la Costa, Falcón. His mother, Teresa de Jesús Moros Acevedo, was a Colombian, from Cúcuta. Nicolás is married to lawyer and politician Cilia Flores (Cilia Adela Flores), who was President of the National Assembly, from 15 August, 2006 to 5 January, 2011, and Attorney General of Venezuela, from 25 January, 2012 to 11 March, 2013. He has a son, politician Nicolás Maduro Guerra (Nicolás Ernesto Maduro Guerra), with his former wife Adriana Guerra Angulo. His son has held several minor offices in the government, including Director General of Presidential Delegations and Instructions of the Vice President, since 25 January, 2017.
Nicolás was raised Catholic. He also follows the teachings of guru Sathya Sai Baba.
Nicolás’ paternal family ancestry is said to be of part Sephardi Jewish origin. They trace their migration to Venezuela from Curaçao, and prior to that the Netherlands, ultimately coming from the Netherlands’ community of Spanish/Portuguese Jews, i.e. Western Sephardi.
Nicolás’ paternal grandfather was named Nicolás Maduro (the son of David Maduro Blijde). Nicolás’ grandfather Nicolás was born on Curaçao. David was born in Colombia, the son of Nicolaas Martinus Maduro and Ursulina Bolina Blijde, who herself was born on the island Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands/Sint Eustatius and Saba.
Nicolás paternal grandmother was named María Presentación García. María was born in Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón, Venezuela.
Nicolás’ maternal grandfather was Pablo Antonio Moros Rodríguez (the son of Rafael Moros Vega and María Natividad Rodríguez). Pablo was born in Venezuela. Rafael was the son of José Rafael Moros Parra and María Antonia Vega Mesa.
Nicolás’ maternal grandmother was Adelina Acevedo Escalante (the daughter of José María Acevedo and Simona Escalante). José was the son of Alejandra Acevedo. Simona was the daughter of María del Tránsito Escalante.
