Noah Baumbach is an American filmmaker. He has directed the films Kicking and Screaming (1995), Highball , Mr. Jealousy , The Squid and the Whale , Margot at the Wedding , Greenberg (2010), Frances Ha , While We’re Young , Mistress America , The Meyerowitz Stories , Marriage Story , and White Noise (2022). He also wrote all of his films, except for Highball , Frances Ha , and Mistress America , the three of which he co-wrote; the latter two with his wife, actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig . He also co-wrote the films The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou , Fantastic Mr. Fox , Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted , and, also with Greta, Barbie (2023). He co-directed the documentary De Palma (2015). His works are often set in New York City.

Noah is the son of Georgia (Nelson) Brown, a film critic and fiction writer, and Jonathan Baumbach, an experimental fiction writer, film critic, university professor, and co-founder of publishing house Fiction Collective. Noah’s father was Jewish. Noah’s mother is Protestant. Noah has a son with his former wife, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh ; and two children with his wife Greta Gerwig.

Noah’s paternal grandfather was Harold M. “Harry” Baumbach (the son of Isaac Baumbach/Bomback/Bombach and Anna/Annie Summer/Sommer). Harold was born in New York, to Austrian Jewish parents. He was a noted painter and academic.

Noah’s paternal grandmother was named Ida Helen Zackheim (the daughter of Ison/Isaac Zackheim and Eva). Ida was born in New York, to Russian Jewish parents. She was a teacher.
