Olaf Scholz is a German politician. A member of the Social Democratic Party, he has been Chancellor of Germany , from 8 December, 2021 to 6 May, 2025. He was also General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, from 20 October, 2002 to 21 March, 2004, Chief Whip of the Social Democratic Party in the Bundestag, from 13 October, 2005 to 21 November, 2007, Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, from 21 November, 2007 to 27 October, 2009, Deputy Leader of the Social Democratic Party in the Bundestag, from 27 October, 2009 to 11 March, 2011, First Mayor of Hamburg, from 7 March, 2011 to 13 March, 2018, and Vice Chancellor of Germany, and Minister of Finance, both, from 14 March, 2018 to 8 December, 2021; as well as, a Member of the Bundestag for Hamburg-Altona, from 26 October, 1998 to 6 June, 2001, and again, from 17 October, 2002 to 11 March, 2011, then for Hamburg, from 7 March, 2011 to 13 March, 2018, and then for Potsdam – Potsdam-Mittelmark II – Teltow-Fläming II, since 26 October, 2021.

His parents, Christel (Grünewald) and Gerhard Scholz, worked in the textile industry. He has two younger brothers, Jens Scholz, an anesthesiologist and CEO of the University Medical Center Schleswig Holstein; and Ingo Scholz, a tech entrepreneur. He was raised in the Rahlstedt district of Hamburg.

Chancellor Scholz is married to politician Britta Ernst, who has been Minister for Education, Youth and Sport of Brandenburg, from 28 September, 2017 to 17 April, 2023, and President of the Kultusministerkonferenz, from 1 January, 2021 to 31 December, 2021, among other duties.

His religious background is Lutheran.
