Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was the fifth President of Iceland, from 1 August, 1996 to 1 August, 2016. He was also Minister of Finance, from 28 September, 1988 to 30 April, 1991.
He is the son of Svanhildur Ólafsdóttir Hjartar and Grímur Kristgeirsson, a barber. He is married to jewellery designer, editor, and businessperson Dorrit Moussaieff. Ólafur has two children with his late wife Guðrún Katrín Þorbergsdóttir, to whom he was married, until her death. Dorrit is an Israeli, of Bukharian Jewish and Austrian Jewish descent.
Ólafur’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his sixth great-grandfather, Eysteinn Jónsson.
Ólafur’s paternal grandfather was Kristgeir Jónsson (the son of Jón Grímsson and Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir). Kristgeir was born in Heiðarbær, Þingvallasveit. Jón was the son of Grímur Þorleifsson and Hallgerður Þórhalladóttir. Guðrún was the daughter of Guðmundur Guðmundsson and Geirlaug Pétursdóttir.
Ólafur’s paternal grandmother was Guðný Ólafsdóttir (the daughter of Ólafur Guðlaugsson and Sesselja Halldóra Guðmundsdóttir). Guðný was born in Reykajvík. Ólafur was the son of Guðlaugur Ólafsson and Sólveig Sigurðardóttir. Sesselja was the daughter of Guðmundur Jónsson and Halldóra Björnsdóttir.
Ólafur’s maternal grandfather was Ólafur Ragnar Hjartar (the son of Hjörtur Bjarnason and Steinunn Guðlaugsdóttir). Ólafur was born in Kambi, Reykhólasveit. Hjörtur was the son of Bjarni Eiríksson and Sigríður Friðriksdóttir. Steinunn was the daughter of Guðlaugur Guðlaugsson and Margrét Skaftadóttir.
Ólafur’s maternal grandmother was Sigríður Kristín Egilsdóttir (the daughter of Egill Guðmundur Jónsson and Steinunn Guðlaugsdóttir). Sigríður was born on Ís. Egill was the son of Jón Ólafsson and Þórdís Egilsdóttir. Steinunn was the daughter of Guðlaugur Guðlaugsson and Margrét Skaftadóttir.
Ólafur’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his great-great-great-grandmother, Guðrún Jónsdóttir.
