Paetongtarn Shinawatra (แพทองธาร ชินวัตร) is a Thai businessperson and politician. She has been Prime Minister of Thailand , from 16 August, 2024 to 29 August, 2025; as well as, Leader of the Pheu Thai Party, from 27 October, 2023 to 22 October, 2025, and Minister of Culture, from 30 June, 2025 to 29 August, 2025. She has been Head of the Pheu Thai Family, since 31 October, 2025, and, previously, from 20 March, 2022 to 27 October, 2023. She was the country’s youngest Prime Minister. She is nicknamed “Ung Ing.”
Prime Minister Paetongtarn is the daughter of Potjaman na Pombejra (born Potjaman Damapong, formerly Potjama Shinawatra) and Thaksin Shinawatra , a businessperson and politician, who was also Prime Minister of Thailand, from 9 February, 2001 to 19 September, 2006. Her older siblings are billionaire Panthongtae Shinawatra and Pinthongta Shinawatra. Paetongtarn is the niece of politician Yingluck Shinawatra , who was Prime Minister of Thailand, from 5 August, 2011 to 7 May, 2014; and of Yaowapha Shinawatra, who is married to politician Somchai Wongsawat , who was Prime Minister of Thailand, from 18 September, 2008 to 2 December, 2008.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn is married to businessperson, politician, and pilot Pitaka Suksawat, with whom she has two children.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s paternal grandfather was Loet Shinawatra (the son of Chiang Saekhu and Saeng Samana). Loet was born in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai, and was a politician, who was an MP for Chiang Mai. Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s great-grandfather Chiang founded Shinawatra Silks, and then worked in finance, construction, and property development. He was the son of Seng Saekhu, who was a Chinese emigrant and tax farmer, from Fengshun, Meizhou, Guangdong, of Hakka descent; Seng arrived in Siam in the 1860s and Chiang Mai in 1908. Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s great-grandmother Saeng was Thai.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s paternal grandmother was Yindi Ramingwong (the daughter of Wang Chuan Cheng, later Charoen Ramingwong, and of Princess Chanthip na Chiangmai). Yindi was born in Mueang Chanthaburi, Chanthaburi. Charoen was a Chinese immigrant, of Hakka descent. Princess Chanthip, was Thai, of Lanna (Chiang Mai) royalty, and was the daughter of Somphamit, the Prince Chaisongkhram, and of Usa na Chiangmai.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s maternal grandfather was police general Samoe Damapong (the son of Saming Damapong). Saming was the son of Da Damaphong and Nang Boonma.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s maternal grandmother was named Potjanee na Pombejra (the daughter of Prom na Pombejra). Prom was the son of Luang Khlang (Tuan), who was of Chinese and Mon descent.
