Péter Magyar is a Hungarian politician and lawyer. He has been Prime Minister of Hungary, since 9 May, 2026, and President of the Tisza Party, since 22 July, 2024. He has also been Vice President of the Tisza Party, from 12 April, 2024 to 22 July, 2024; as well as, a Member of the European Parliament for Hungary, from 16 July, 2024 to 9 May, 2026, and a Member of the National Assembly, since 9 May, 2026.
Péter is the son of Mónika Erőss and István Magyar, who were lawyers. His sister is married to lawyer and politician Márton Melléthei-Barna. Péter has three children with his former wife, lawyer and politician Judit Varga. Judit was Minister of State for European Union Relations, from 22 May, 2018 to 11 July, 2019, and Minister of Justice, from 12 July, 2019 to 31 July, 2023.
His second cousin, once removed, is neurobiologist Tamás Freund. Péter is a great-nephew of legal scholar, professor, and politician Ferenc Mádl, and of his wife, Dalma (Némethy) Mádl. Ferenc was Minister of Education, from 22 February, 1993 to 15 July, 1994, and President of Hungary, from 4 August, 2000 to 4 August, 2005. He was the brother of Péter’s maternal grandmother Theresia/Teréz Mádl.
Péter’s paternal grandmother was named Jelena Horváth.
Péter’s maternal grandfather was Pál Lajos Erőss (the son of Lajos Erőss and Ilona Sárközy). Pál was born in Kömörő. He was a judge, who hosted a television program about legal affairs.
Péter’s maternal grandmother was Theresia/Teréz Mádl (the daughter of Anton/Antal Mádl and Mária Lohn). Theresia was an ethnic German, of Danube Swabian descent. Anton was born in Bánd, the son of Anton/Antal Mádl and Theresia/Teréz Wolst/Volszt. Maria was born in Bánd, the daughter of Josef/József Lohn and Theresia/Teréz Weinhardt/Veinhardt.
