Phil Gramm is an American economist and politician. He was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, from January 3, 1979 to January 5, 1983, and again, from February 12, 1983 to January 3, 1985; a U.S. Senator from Texas, from January 3, 1985 to November 30, 2002; and Chair of the Senate Banking Committee, from January 3, 1999 to January 3, 2001, and again, from January 20, 2001 to June 6, 2001. He switched his affiliation from Democratic to Republican in 1983.
He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1996 .
He is the son of Florence (Scroggins) and Kenneth Marsh Gramm. He is married to Wendy Lee Gramm, an economist and scholar, with whom he has two children. Wendy is of Korean and Native Hawaiian descent.
Phil’s paternal grandfather was George Gramm (the son Frederick Louis Gramm and Caroline Hanst). George was born in New York, to German parents.
Phil’s paternal grandmother was named Eleanor Louisa Smith (the daughter of Mary Jane). Eleanor was born in New York.
