Phil Murphy is an American financier, diplomat, and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was U.S. Ambassador to Germany, from September 3, 2009 to August 26, 2013, Governor of New Jersey, from January 16, 2018 to January 20, 2026, and Chair of the National Governors Association, from July 15, 2022 to July 14, 2023.
He is the son of Dorothy Louise (Dunton) and Walter F. Murphy. He is married to political activist, real estate financial analyst, and politician Tammy (Snyder) Murphy, with whom he has four children.
