Pierre Poilievre, full name Pierre Marcel Poilievre, is a Canadian politician. He has been Leader of the Conservative Party, since September 10, 2022, and Leader of the Opposition, since August 18, 2025, and, previously, from September 10, 2022 to April 28, 2025. He has also been Minister of State (Democratic Reform), from July 15, 2013 to November 4, 2015, and Minister of Employment and Social Development, from February 9, 2015 to November 4, 2015; as well as, a Member of Parliament for Nepean—Carleton/Carleton (ON), from June 28, 2004 to April 28, 2025, and then for Battle River—Crowfoot (AB), since August 18, 2025.

Pierre’s biological mother was Jacqueline Farrell, then a sixteen year-old high school student. Pierre was adopted, by Marlene and Donald Poilievre, who were schoolteachers. The couple later adopted his biological half-brother. His adoptive father is of half French descent, and Pierre is fluent in French. Pierre is married to Senate aide and political staffer Anaida Poilievre (born Anaida Galindo), with whom he has two children. Anaida is an emigrant, from Caracas, Venezuela, who moved to Toronto, Ontario, when in 1995 when she was eight.

Donald Poilievre is the son of Paul Michel Poilievre and Zalla/Zela May (Stroud) Bannerman. Paul was born in Howell, Saskatchewan, the son of Joseph Constant Poilievre and Eugenie Marie Lequeux, who were born in Loire, France. Zela was the daughter of Fredrick Stroud and Florence Caroline Mann, who were from Michigan, U.S.

Marlene Poilievre is the daughter of Louise Boese. Louise was an ethnic German, born in Russia, the daughter of Jacob Boese. The family has a Mennonite background.

Pierre’s biological maternal grandfather was Patrick Francis Farrell (the son of Thomas Farrell and Brigid Gaffney). Patrick was born in Frayne Athboy, County Meath, Ireland, and moved to Canada at the age of 25, in 1953. Thomas was the son of William Farrell. Brigid was born in Frayne, Athboy, the daughter of Laurence Gaffney and Rose Clarke.

Pierre’s biological maternal grandmother was Eileen Mary/Molly Malloy (the daughter of Leo Stephen Thomas Malloy and Ellen Alice/Carmelta “Nellie” Foley). Eileen was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and was of Irish descent. Leo was the son of John P. Malloy, whose parents were from County Mayo, Ireland, and of Ellen Agnes Kennedy, whose parents were also Irish, her father from County Nenagh, and her mother from Clones, Monaghan. Pierre’s biological great-grandmother Ellen was the daughter of Peter Foley, who had roots in County Tyrone and County Cavan, and of Ellen M. Cassidy.
