Rebecca Lee Crumpler was an American physician, nurse, and author. She was the first African-American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the U.S., qualifying at the New England Female Medical College in 1864.
She was the daughter of Matilda/Phebe Webber and Absolum Davis. She was raised in Pennsylvania, by her aunt. Rebecca was married to laborer Wyatt Lee, until his death, and then to Arthur Crumpler, until her death. Both Wyatt and Arthur were former slaves. Rebecca and Arthur had a daughter. Rebecca was a Baptist.
