Robert Mueller was an American lawyer and civil servant. A member of the Republican Party, he was U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, from October 10, 1986 to April 6, 1987, U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, from August 1990 to January 1993, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, from August 1998 to August 2001, U.S. Deputy Attorney General, from January 20, 2001 to May 10, 2001, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, from September 4, 2001 to September 4, 2013, and Special Counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice, from May 17, 2017 to May 29, 2019.

Robert was the son of Alice C. (Truesdale) and Robert Swan Mueller, who was a DuPont executive and psychology major; and had served as a Navy officer in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during WWII. Robert was raised in Prinecton, New Jersey, and then Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended high school in Concord, New Hampshire. Robert was in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 1968 to 1971. He was married to Ann Cabell Standish, until his death, with whom he had two children.

Robert was raised a Presbyterian, and later became an Episcopalian.

Robert’s paternal grandfather was Robert Swan Mueller (the son of Gustave A. Mueller, M.D., and of Grace Swan Miller). Robert’s grandfather Robert was born in Pennsylvania. Gustave was a prominent physician. He was born in Crestline, Ohio, the son of Prussian German parents, August C. E. Müller/Mueller, from Province of Pomerania; and Frederika/Fredericka/Frederick “Elizabeth.” Robert’s great-grandmother Grace was the daughter of William B. Miller and Grace Swan, who herself was born in Pennsylvania, to Scottish parents.

Robert’s paternal grandmother was Anna Elizabeth Freeman (the daughter of Dr. Edward J. Freeman and Emily Jane Knecht). Anna was born in Pennsylvania. Edward was the son of Dr. George W. Freeman and Matilda M./E. Seip. Emily was of German descent, and was the daughter of John Knecht and Eliza Catherine Riegel.

Robert’s maternal grandfather was Melville Douglas Truesdale (the son of William Haynes Truesdale and Anna/Anne/Annie Topping). Melville was born in Minnesota. William was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was a railroad executive, who was president of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W). He was the son of Calvin Truesdale and Charlotte M. Haynes. Robert’s great-grandmother Anna was the daughter of Lt. Col. Melville Douglas Topping and Cedelia Madison. Melville was killed commanding the 71st Indiana Regiment at the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, during the American Civil War.

Robert’s maternal grandmother was Alice Bulkley Moss (the daughter of Frederick William Moss and Grace Alice Bulkley). Robert’s grandmother Alice was born in New York. Frederick was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, the son of Joshua Moss and Mary Longden. Grace was the daughter of Edwin Bulkley and Helen Perry.
