Roger Avary is a Canadian-American film and television director, screenwriter, and producer. He directed and wrote the films Killing Zoe , Mr. Stitch , The Rules of Attraction , and Lucky Day . He also wrote the film Silent Hill , and co-wrote the film Beowulf (2007). He co-received a “story by” credit on Pulp Fiction , which won Best Original Screenplay at the 67th Academy Awards. He was also a writer for the show XIII: The Series .

Roger was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, and raised in Arizona, U.S. His father is the son of American parents, and was raised in Brazil because of his own father’s career as a pilot. His mother is German. He has also been known as Franklin Brauner.

Roger is said to be a descendant of English pirate Henry Every, who was not known to have had children.

Roger’s paternal grandfather was Capt. Edwin Davis “Ned” Avary (the son of Dr. Hugh Ezzard Avary and Evelyn “Ebbie” Davis/Clement). Edwin was born in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, and was a pilot, who flew China Clippers from San Francisco to Hawaii in the 1930s; and later for Pan American World Airways. Roger’s great-grandfather Hugh was born in Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia, the son of Moody Burt Avary and Minna Lou “Minnie” Ezzard. Roger’s great-grandmother Evelyn was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, the daughter of Edwin Davis, who was president of The Franklin Davis Nursery Company; and of Mary Regester Pope.

Roger’s paternal grandmother was Nancy Roberts (the daughter of Roger Marr “Barney” Roberts and Daisy Walker Friedrick). Nancy was born in Woodland, Yolo County, California. Roger was born in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, and built rental houses in Sunnyvale, California; as well as worked in the auto industry. He was the son of Isaac Phillips “I.P.” Roberts, a professor, who was Dean of the College of Agriculture at Cornell University; and of Margaret Jane Marr. Roger’s great-grandmother Daisy was born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Her father, Alphonse Friedrick, was born in Metz, Département de la Moselle, Lorraine, France, to a father from Landkreis Leipzig, Saxony, Germany, and to a mother from Le Locle, District du Locle, Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Daisy’s mother, Roger’s great-great-grandmother Mary Ann Walker, was the daughter of an English father, from Kingbridge/Kirks Bridge, Yorkshire, and of a mother was of Colonial American ancestry, with Dutch roots.
