Roger Vadim was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, author, artist, and actor. A figure of the French New Wave, he directed the films And God Created Woman (1956), No Sun in Venice , The Night Heaven Fell , Blood and Roses , a segment of The Seven Deadly Sins , Love on a Pillow , Vice and Virtue , The Game Is Over , a segment of Spirits of the Dead , Barbarella , Pretty Maids All in a Row , Hellé , Don Juan, or If Don Juan Were a Woman ; Charlotte (1974), Game of Seduction , Night Games (1980), The Hot Touch , Surprise Party , and And God Created Woman (1986). He wrote his Love on a Pillow , Charlotte , and Surprise Party ; and co-wrote all of his other films, except for The Seven Deadly Sins , Pretty Maids All in a Row , Night Games , The Hot Touch , and And God Created Woman (1986). He also co-wrote the films The Naked Heart , Blackmailed (1951), Plucking the Daisy , and Be Beautiful But Shut Up , and wrote a segment of Tales of Paris . He co-starred in the film Into the Night .

He was the son of Marie-Antoinette (Ardilouze), a stage actress, and Igor Nikolaevich Plemiannikov/Plemyannikov, a military officer, diplomat, and pianist. His father worked as a vice consul of France in Alexandria, Egypt, and later consul in Mersin, Turkey. His father was from Kyiv, now Ukraine, and was of Russian, German, and some Latvian and Estonian, ancestry. His mother was born in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France, and was of French, as well as Occitan, and a small amount of German, descent. Roger was partly raised in the Middle East with his father’s postings, and later at a hostel his mother ran in the French Alps.

Roger was married to actress Marie-Christine Barrault, until his death. He had a daughter with his former wife, Danish actress Annette Stroyberg; a son, actor Christian Vadim, with his former partner, actress Catherine Deneuve ; a daughter with his former wife, American actress and activist Jane Fonda ; and a son with his former wife Catherine Schneider. Catherine was the sister of novelist Dominique Schneidre, and the daughter of businessperson and Schneider Electric chairman Charles Schneider.

Roger’s paternal grandfather was Nikolai Alekseevich Plemyannikov (the son of Alexey Petrovich Plemyannikov and Louise Wilhelmina Nikolaevna Peters). Roger’s grandfather Nikolai was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Alexey was born in Kaluga, the son of Petr Alekseevich Plemyannikov and Ekaterina Antonovna. Roger’s great-grandmother Louise was born in Kronstadt, Saint Petersburg, the daughter of Iohann Nicolaus Ferdinand/Nikolai Ivanovich, von Peters, who was from Riga, Latvia; and of Katharina Elisabeth Ernst, who was from Tartu, Estonia.

Roger’s paternal grandmother was named Vanda-Yulia Ottovna Gunter (the daughter of Otto Gunter).

Roger’s maternal grandfather was Antoine Eugène Paul Ardilouze (the son of Antoine Ardilouze and Marie Pauline Doërr). Roger’s grandfather Antoine was born in Toulouse, Haute-Garonne, Midi-Pyrénées, France. Roger’s great-grandfather Antoine was born in Puch-d’Agenais, Lot-et-Garonne, Aquitaine, the son of Bernard Ardilouze and Marthe Propis. Roger’s great-grandmother Marie Pauline was born in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Marie Pauline’s father, Henri Laurent Doërr, had a father from Stockstadt am Rhein, Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany, and a mother who was of German, from Dausenau, Miellen, Rhineland-Palatinate; and French descent.
