Romain Gavras is a French film director and screenwriter. He has co-directed the documentary film A Cross the Universe ; and directed the films Our Day Will Come , The World Is Yours , Athena (2022), and Sacrifice (2025), all of which he also co-wrote. A three-time Grammy nominee, he has directed numerous music videos for popular artists, including “Signatune,” “Stress,” “The Age of the Understatement,” “Born Free,” “Bad Girls,” “No Church in the Wild,” and “Gosh.”
He is the son of film producer, journalist, and director Michèle Ray-Gavras and Greek-French film director, screenwriter, and producer Costa-Gavras (Konstantinos Gavras). His father was born in Loutra Iraias, Arcadia, and lives and works in France. His mother was born in Paris. His siblings are film producer Alexandre Gavras and director and screenwriter Julie Gavras.
Romain’s paternal grandfather was a member of the Pro-Soviet branch of the Greek Resistance, and was jailed during the Greek Civil War.
Romain’s maternal grandfather was Jean-François Ray (the son of Michel Ray and Jeanne-Marie Peauroux). Jean-François was born in Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France. Michel was the son of Jean Ray and Suzanne Roux. Jeanne-Marie was the daughter of François Peauroux and Marie Fontfreyde.
Romain’s maternal grandmother was Hélène Antoinette Cénazandotti (the daughter of Antoine Augustin Cénazandotti and Fanny Simon). Hélène was born in Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France. Antoine was born in Nice, the son of Pierre Cénazandotti and Jeanne Massa. Fanny was born in Tourette-Levens, Alpes-Maritimes, the daughter of Rosalindre Simon and Augustine Bolier.
