Roman Herzog was a German politician, judge, and legal scholar. He served as Minister of Education and Sports, from 11 May, 1978 to 4 June, 1982, Minister of the Interior, from 4 June, 1982 to 4 October, 1983, Vice-President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, from 20 December, 1983 to 16 November, 1987, Judge of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany for the First Senate, from 20 December, 1983 to 30 June, 1994, President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, from 16 November, 1987 to 30 June, 1994, and President of Germany, from 1 July, 1994 to 30 June, 1999; as well as, a Member of the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg for Göppingen, from 3 June, 1980 to 4 October, 1983.

He was the son of Helene and archivist Karl Theodor Maximilian “Theo” Herzog. He was married to Christiane Krauß, until her death; and then to Alexandra Freifrau von Berlichingen, until his death. He had two children with Christiane.

Roman’s paternal grandfather was named Georg Herzog.

Roman’s maternal grandfather was surnamed Schulze.
