A striker, he plays for America-RJ. He was previously with Vasco da Gama, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Flamengo, Valencia, Vasco da Gama, Fluminense, Al Sadd, Miami FC, and Adelaide United, and the Brazil national team. He managed the Brazil national team, initially on an interim basis.
Romário is the son of Manuela Ladislau Faria and Edevair de Souza Faria.
