Roy Campanella was an American professional baseball player. A catcher, he played for the Washington/Baltimore Elite Giants, the Philadelphia Stars, and the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro leagues, and the Brooklyn Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was nicknamed “Campy.”

Roy was the son of Ida and John Campanella. His paternal grandparents were Italian. His mother was African-American. Roy was married to Ruthe Willis, until her death, and then to Roxie Doles, until his death. He had two children with his former wife Bernice Ray, and four children, including television director and producer Roy Campanella II, with Ruthe.
