Ryan McDonagh is an American professional ice hockey player. A defenseman, he plays for, and is alternate captain of, the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL); and was with the U.S. national team. He was previously with the New York Rangers, which he also captained; Barys Astana, and the Nashville Predators.
Ryan is the son of Patty and Sean McDonagh. His uncle is professional football player and coach Steve Walsh. Ryan is married to Kaylee Keys, with whom he has three children.
Ryan’s paternal grandfather was named Peter Joseph McDonagh.
Ryan’s paternal grandmother was named Kathleen Harkin.
Ryan’s maternal grandfather is named William Patrick Walsh.
Ryan’s maternal grandmother is Marlene Marie Busse (the daughter of Arthur Herman Busse and Jeanette M. Bambenek). Marlene was born in Minnesota. Arthur was of Polish descent, and was the son of Herman H. Busse and Helen Louise “Lizzie” Manzoke/Manska. Jeanette was born in Minnesota, to Polish parents.
