He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. His father is a real estate broker and his mother is a dermatologist. Sam is married to engineer Oliver Mulherin, with whom he has a son.
Sam’s paternal grandfather was Jack Isadore Altman (the son of Harry J. Altman and Bertie Schreiber). Jack’s parents were Polish Jewish immigrants. Bertie was the daughter of Samuel S. Schreiber and Zeporeah Havah Kovitz.
