Sammy Baugh was an American professional football player, and coach. A quarterback, punter, and safety, he played his entire career with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL). He was also coach for the Hardin–Simmons Cowboys, the New York Titans, and the Houston Oilers, and assistant coach for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Sammy was the son of Lucy Lucinda and James Valentine “Jim” Baugh, a worker on the Santa Fe Railroad. He was married to Edmonia Smith, until her death, with whom he had five children.

Sammy’s paternal grandfather was John Pascal Baugh (the son of William Lovic Baugh and Lucille Harris “Lucy” Purcell). John was born in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas. William was born in Franklin County, Georgia, the son of William Martin Baugh and Elizabeth Lindsey. Lucille was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, the daughter of John Russell Purcell and Stacy Smart.

Sammy’s paternal grandmother was Geneva/Geneava Ann Medlin (the daughter of Mathew Hawkins Medlin and Celeta Sofia Wright). Mathew was born in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, the son of Mathew Medlin and Elizabeth Bell. Celeta was born in Madison County, Tennessee.

Sammy’s maternal grandfather was Samuel Johnson Ray (the son of William G. T. Ray and Lucindia/Lucinda Johnson). William was the son of Rueben/Reuben Young Ray and Keziah Sharp. Lucinda was born in Troup County, Georgia, and possibly was the daughter of Samuel Parker Turner and Sarah Perinder “Sally” Rowe.

Sammy’s maternal grandmother was Sarah Ellen Baggett (the daughter of Abraham “Abe” Baggett and Mary Ann Brewer). Sarah was born in Texas. Abraham was born in Alabama. Mary Ann was born in Missouri, the daughter of William C. Brewer and Milley Brewer.
