He is the son of actors Timothy West (Timothy Lancaster West) and Prunella Scales (born Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth). He has two children with his partner, playwright Laura Wade.
Samuel’s paternal grandfather was actor Lockwood West (Harry Lockwood West, the son of Henry Cope West and Mildred Hartley). Lockwood was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. Samuel’s great-grandfather Henry was the son of Henry Hartley West and Eliza Hubbard Hammill. Mildred was the daughter of Charles Mandall Hartley and Mary Annie Taylor.
Samuel’s paternal grandmother was Eileen Olive Carleton-Crowe (the daughter of Christopher William Carlton-Crowe and Clara Marie). Christopher was born in Ireland.
