Sarah Barthel is an American singer and multi-instrumentalist. She is one half of music duo Phantogram, alongside Josh Carter. She is on vocals, keyboards, piano, programming, synthesizers, guitars, and production.
Sarah’s paternal grandfather was James Edward Barthel (the son of George Barthel and Mary Stasoff). James was born in Lackawack, Wawarsing, Ulster, New York, and was of German, Dutch, and possibly Czech, descent. George was born in New York, the son of Edward Barthel, whose mother was from Odenwald, Baden, Germany; and of Lucy E. Wright, whose maternal grandparents were from Baden. Sarah’s great-grandmother Mary was the daughter of Mike Stasoff and Annie Derhonick.
Sarah’s paternal grandmother was Lillian Frances Hoerner (the daughter of Charles Hoerner and Louise Sophia Tamm). Lillian was born in Shandaken, New York. Charles was born in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, to German parents, Charles G. Hoerner and Katharina Hoerner, who were from Rhineland-Palatinate, Charles from Speyer and Katharina from Dierbach. Sarah’s great-grandmother Louise was born in New York, the daughter of Henry William Tamm, whose parents were German; and of Anna Margret Bartels, who was also German.
Sarah’s maternal grandfather was George Demarest (the son of Gottfried Dammer and Katharine Adelheid Poestges). George was born in New Jersey, and was of German descent.
Sarah’s maternal grandmother was Kathleen Marie Hall (the daughter of Isaac John Hall and Mary Ellen Driscoll). Kathleen was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and was of half Dutch and half Irish ancestry.
