Schalk Burger is a South African rugby union player. A loose-forward, he played for Western Province, Stormers, Suntory Sungoliath, and Saracens, and the South Africa national team/Springbok XV. He was a member of the 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning team. He is 6′4″.
Schalk is the son of Schalk Burger, Sr., who was also a rugby player. He is married to interior designer Michele de Munck, with whom he has two children.
Schalk’s patrilineal line likely traces to Berndt Burcherdt, later Burger, who was born, c. 1668, in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; and to his wife, Marritje/Maria van der Merwe, who had Dutch and German ancestry. Berndt is the Progenitor, Stamouer in Afrikaans, of the Burger family in South Africa.
