Shyne, or Moses “Shyne” Barrow, is a Belizean rapper and politician. As a rapper, he is known for his time on Bad Boy Records from 2000 to 2001. In Belize, he has been Leader of the Opposition, from June 25, 2021 to September 16, 2021, and again, from February 1, 2022 to March 14, 2025; as well as, a Member of the House of Representatives for Mesopotamia, from November 11, 2020 to March 12, 2025.
Shyne is the son of Frances Imeon Myvette and Dean Barrow (Dean Oliver Barrow), who served as Prime Minister of Belize, from February 8, 2008 to November 12, 2020. His uncle, mother’s brother, is Belize politician Michael Finnegan (born Michael Myvett), who was the previous Member of the Belize House of Representatives for Mesopotamia, from June 30, 1993 to November 11, 2020, before Shyne replaced him in the seat. Shyne has stated that his mother has partial Ethiopian Jewish ancestry.
Shyne moved with his mother to Brooklyn, New York City, New York, U.S., when he was a child; he lived in Crown Heights and East Flatbush, while his mother worked as a domestic. Shyne spent summers in Belize. He began a rap career in Brooklyn, before being deported to Belize in 2009 due to his criminal conviction. In 2006, he legally changed his name to Moses Michael Levi Barrow. He converted to Orthodox Judaism in Israel in 2010. Shyne is married to Catherine, a businessperson, with whom he has a daughter.
Shyne’s paternal grandfather was Arthur Innes Barrow (the son of Ebenezer Oliver Buntin Barrow and Iris Sebastian).
Shyne’s paternal grandmother was named Joyce Erica Lindo.
